Nirobi 2007
600,000 people live in terrible conditions across 8 slums around the city of Nirobi. The crowded living conditions, poor hygienic environment and poor socio economic status, as well as unprotected sex and basic lack of knowledge all combine to create extremely high occurrences of TB and HIV/AIDS.
The Order works with 8 health centres to fight the development and spread of these diseases. The program helps the early identification and treatment of Tuberculosis as well as access to anti-retroviral treatments for AIDS. The Program focuses on training as well as medical care, and has extremely strong links to the community.
Kenya 2006
To respond to the food crisis in Northern Kenya, the Order of Malta works with the local dioceses to supply food and medicines to the population. Two sequential draught seasons have caused a complete collapse of local food supply and people are starving and becoming ill.
The project received a sum of money from the FAS and this - through Malteser International - attracted a further significant matching funding from the German Foreign Office. It is estimated that about 30,000 people will have access to this support.
Local Malteser International staff are working together with the dioceses of Maralal, Marsabit and Isiolo to distribute food and medicines to through eight distribution centres. The current rain season has started, so that the long-term prospects are looking significantly improved.
