the work of the FAS is in many of the most difficult environments around the world. Ensuring that appropriate professionalism, the ethos of Catholic faith and personal security are assured is a continuing challenge. Significant training and an advanced set of highly specific skills is required to enable people to work effectively, which means that the FAS is typically not able to offer volunteers short term opportunities to help on the ground.

Our Parent, Malteser International does regularly take interns/trainees, though these are typically a 12 month commitment, and involve several months of training at HQ, before being deployed in the field.

Another way to be involved is the Rapid Deployment Unit. These volunteers attend regular training sessions, and are deployed in emergency situations, such as earthquakes. Such volunteers need to be on call to travel to any part of the globe within 24 hours.
